Comments: This imag is from the suite titled Chagall by Carmine Benincasa. The portfolio was published to commemorate the lifting of racial laws against the Jews passed during World War II.

 

A facsimile letter in Italian by Stefano Giamatti, dated 2004, also accompanies the print. A translated version (also present) reads:

"To whom it may concern: The book "Chagall" was published in 1980 in Milan by the editor Ilte. The entire edition was 300 copies. It was illustrated with 50 images by the Russian painter Marc Chagall from his most famous works. From this edition the first 30 copies were offered to members of the Parliament, to members of the Jewish community and to members of the government in charge. The first 30 copies were signed and numbered by the artist. The copy in my possession is number "1" and has the signature of the editor in green ink. This copy (number 1) was donated to Mrs. Nilda Lotti the then Speaker of the House."
